The Air in Your Home Sucks Without Plants

February 21, 2019

As your Plant Lady Realtor, you know I’m all for finding you the perfect home, but home isn’t just about square footage and curb appeal. It’s also about what you’re breathing inside those four walls. And honestly?! The air quality in your home sucks without plants.

I know, I know…. you’ve got the best air filter out (eye roll). You dust once a week. You might not even have pets, but that only gets you so far. There are a ton of things that we use every day that give off mild pollutants in the air we breathe. (https://www.lung.org/media/press-releases/2024-pittsburgh-metro-area)

The Secret Superpower of Houseplants

As a plant enthusiast I want to tell you that plants aren’t just pretty decor. Plants are also natural air purifiers. They just happen to be nice to look at as well (wink emoji)

  • They Absorb the Bad: Through a process called phytoremediation; plants pull those volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants into their leaves and roots, and effectively neutralize them.

  • They Release the Good: Most people are familiar with plants performing photosynthesis; where they release fresh clean oxygen back into your air. They also naturally regulate humidity, which is a huge plus for dry indoor environments.

Which Plants Are the Best Air Heroes?

You don’t have to run out and buy a bunch of plants to make a small jungle in every room of your house. But having a few strategic plants can make a huge difference! Base on famous NASA studies on clean air, these are few of my favorites for any home that just so happen to be great low maintenance/beginner friendly plants:

  1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata): They’re tough, they look great, and they're one of the few plants that release oxygen at night. Perfect for the bedroom.
  2. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum): Super easy to care for and incredibly effective at scrubbing formaldehyde, which is common in many building materials.
  3. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): A beautiful flowering option that tackles all three common VOCs: formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.
  4. Spider Plant (Clorophytum comosum): of the easiest to grow, these are amazing at removing carbon monoxide and xylene.

Better Air, Better Home Value

As a Realtor, I also want you to think about this in terms of lifestyle and long-term home health.

A home filled with vibrant plants isn’t just a home with better air. It’s a home that feels more calm and inviting and alive. It’s a space that shows you care about your environment; both inside and out.  I can tell you that a well cared for home is always a more valuable home.

So if you’re feeling sluggish, or your house just feels a little stuffy; skip the expensive gadgets for a minute and bring in some green. Your lungs and your Realtor will thank you!
